NOTICES 8 DECEMBER 2024

Morning Anthem

This morning’s anthem comes from Mendelssohn’s oratorio about the life of St Paul, opus 36, written in 1836. It was a huge work, whose premiere in Leipzig involved an orchestra of 172 players and a choir of 364 voices. We haven’t quite gone that far today; this movement features one of our soprano scholars, Maddie, alongside clarinettist Robert Hill. The text is from Matthew 23:37. The composer needs little introduction, being basically a regular at St John’s - Mendelssohn is thought to have visited St John’s in the 1840s and played the organ, albeit before Betty’s time.
