Whitsun Carols, 19th May 2024
A unique musical service at 6pm concluding our annual cycle of carol services which tell the events of the Christian year. At Whitsun Carols we commemorate the events from Easter to Pentecost, with readings and musical selections from the choir and guest musicians. including Berlioz’s Resurrexit, Stanford’s Coelos Ascendit, Gloria from Handel’s Dixit Dominus and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Russian Easter Festival Overture. A reception with the first of the summer Pimms will follow.
Memorial Service for Anne Mallinson
17th May, 12noon
A memorial service to give thanks for the life of Anne Mallinson will be held at St John’s on Friday, 17th May, at 12noon. Anne was a long term parishioner and committed community supporter, serving as a Justice of the Peace in Westminster and councillor on Westminster City Council as well as Lord Mayor of Westminster in 1986-87. The service is open to the public.
Scholar Showcase
Prom Concert 26th May, 11.30am
Hear some of our scholars in a special recital including organ solos by Ben Collyer and Finzi songs performed by Jacob Cole and Ted Day. The recital will take place immediately following the 10am service on 26th May and will last around 45 minutes. Further recitals featuring other of our choral scholars to follow in June and July.
Safeguarding at St John’s
Safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults is a priority at St John’s. The Parochial Church Council (PCC) carries out an annual review of the parish’s Safeguarding Policy and the current policy is available in the porch and on the parish website. Safeguarding concerns can be raised in the first instance with the church’s Safeguarding Officer, Mary Langford.

Ben Collyer in Concert
Ben Collyer’s final college recital is on 14th June at the Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall at the Royal College of Music, Prince Consort Road, SW7 2BS. It takes place at 6.15pm and features music by Bach, Watkins, Durufle, Karg-Elert & a world premiere by Francis Pott. Admission is free.
Ben is also appearing in this year’s proms on 25th August 7.30pm at the Royal Albert Hall when he will play the organ as part of a group of students from London and Helsinki performing Holst’s The Planets. Tickets are available via the BBC Proms website.
COMMUNITY NOTICES
Book Club
St John’s Book Club met recently to discuss Scarborough by Canadian author Catherine Hernandez, which was a popular choice. They have chosen their next book – the thriller Trust No One by New Zealand author Paul Cleave – and will meet to discuss it on 17th June. Giggles and Gossip
Thursdays, 9.30-11am
Giggles & Gossip, a playgroup for parents with babies and toddlers, meets on Thursday mornings. There is soft play available and the club will also consist of crafts and a story time in which parents and children can take part.
